Yamaha lost its first podium of the 2024 MotoGP season due to Fabio Quartararo’s penalty for a tyre pressure breach at the Portimao sprint. Quartararo, starting from 23rd on the grid, finished third before receiving an eight-second time penalty. The penalty allowed KTM tester Dani Pedrosa to secure his first MotoGP podium since 2017. Quartararo’s penalty only cost him positions to Pedrosa and Franco Morbidelli due to the sprint’s unique nature. The tyre pressure limits were lowered this season after numerous infringements in the previous year. Multiple riders, including Quartararo, were penalized for not maintaining the required tyre pressure during the Jerez sprint, impacting the overall standings.
